Broncos Acquire Jaylen Waddle from Dolphins in Draft Trade

The Denver Broncos made a significant move on Tuesday by trading for wide receiver Jaylen Waddle from the Miami Dolphins. According to a source, the Broncos will send their first-round pick (30th overall), along with third- and fourth-round picks (94th and 130th) to Miami in exchange for Waddle and a fourth-round pick (111th overall).

Waddle, who is 27 years old, is expected to undergo a physical with the Broncos on Wednesday, as reported by ESPN”s Jeff Darlington. This trade marks a change for the Broncos, who had not acquired any players from other teams since free agency opened, focusing instead on re-signing 17 of their 21 unrestricted, restricted, and exclusive rights free agents.

As one of the fastest players in the league, Waddle is anticipated to bring a much-needed big-play capability to a Broncos offense that has struggled in recent seasons. Over the past two years, the Broncos have ranked near the bottom of the league in three-and-out drives, finishing 29th last season with 25% of their offensive possessions resulting in three-and-outs. Waddle”s stats from the previous season, including 64 receptions for 910 yards and six touchdowns, would have placed him among the top performers on the Broncos roster.

Drafted sixth overall by Miami in 2021, Waddle set an NFL rookie record with 104 receptions. Following the Dolphins” acquisition of Tyreek Hill, Waddle continued to excel under head coach Mike McDaniel, achieving a career-high of 1,356 yards and eight touchdowns in the 2022 season and recording 1,014 yards and four touchdowns in 2023. He recently signed a three-year, $84.75 million contract extension that is set to run through 2028.

Throughout his career, Waddle has accumulated 5,039 receiving yards, ranking him 10th among NFL wide receivers, and has shown his ability to gain yards after the catch, ranking 11th in that category. With 26 career touchdown receptions and one rushing touchdown, he is a versatile threat on the field. The Broncos will take on a $5 million salary cap hit for 2026 but will be responsible for the remainder of Waddle”s contract, as much of his 2026 guarantee has already been paid by Miami.

Despite Sean Payton and general manager George Paton previously expressing confidence in their current receiving corps, the addition of Waddle signifies a shift in strategy. With Courtland Sutton being the only Broncos receiver among the league”s top 48 in receptions of at least 20 yards last season, it is evident that the team needed to enhance their offensive capabilities.

The Broncos, who finished the regular season with a 14-3 record, were highlighted for their exceptional defense, ranking first in sacks and red zone defense. However, concerns about their offensive performance persisted, especially after a disappointing second-half showing against the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship Game.

Waddle will now join a receiving group that includes Sutton, Pat Bryant, Troy Franklin, Marvin Mims Jr., Lil”Jordan Humphrey, and Michael Bandy. Meanwhile, the Dolphins now hold two first-round picks in this year”s draft and have a total of 11 selections overall.
