Cleveland Browns Re-sign Defensive Lineman Sam Kamara for 2026 Season

The Cleveland Browns have made a significant move by re-signing defensive lineman Sam Kamara for the upcoming 2026 season. This announcement was made on March 20 by his agency, LAA Sports.

Kamara has been with the Browns since 2022, gradually progressing from the practice squad to the active roster. His contract is a one-year deal worth $1.1 million, with no guaranteed money, reflecting the team”s strategy to maintain flexibility in their roster.

Throughout his tenure with the Browns, few players have had to fight for their position as much as Kamara. Originally from Carteret, New Jersey, he played college football at Stony Brook, an FCS school, and went undrafted in the 2021 NFL Draft. He initially signed with the Chicago Bears as an undrafted free agent, but his time there was short-lived as he moved between the practice squad and the active roster during his single season in Chicago.

In October 2022, Kamara joined the Browns” practice squad, and his journey has been characterized by a series of practice squad elevations and re-signings. Although it was not a glamorous path, he consistently demonstrated enough potential to remain with the organization. Notably, in the 2023 season finale against the Cincinnati Bengals, he achieved a career-high with seven tackles. His breakout moment came in Week 18 of the 2024 season when he made his first career start at defensive tackle against the Baltimore Ravens, where he recorded six tackles.

As the Browns prepare for the 2026 season, they are undergoing several changes on their defensive front. Veteran defensive tackle Shelby Harris will not be returning, and the team is looking to bolster its depth with new additions, including Kalia Davis, a sixth-round pick in 2022 who has starting experience.

Kamara”s re-signing adds a reliable rotational option to the defensive line, crucial for managing the demands of a 17-game season. His contract structure, with no guaranteed money, minimizes risk for the team while providing Kamara an opportunity to solidify his place on the roster.

The Browns are also transitioning to a new head coach, Todd Monken, who comes from Baltimore with a clear vision for both the offense and the defensive front. As the team heads into training camp, Kamara will compete for a roster spot alongside Mason Graham and Kalia Davis, amidst other depth players still to be finalized.

This re-signing presents Kamara a chance to maintain a roster position for an entire season without interruptions. At 28 years old, he is entering a more stable phase of his career and aims to translate his flashes of brilliance into consistent performance on the field. While his spot on the Week 1 roster is not assured, he has earned the opportunity to compete for it.
