LSU Freshman Defensive Lineman Impresses Early in Spring Camp

The LSU Tigers kicked off their Spring Camp on Tuesday morning, entering a crucial phase of the offseason under the leadership of head coach Lane Kiffin. The program is now engaged in a four-week period filled with competition as over 50 newcomers vie for playing time following the first day of practice.

Kiffin acknowledged the challenges ahead, stating, “We have a lot of work to do. Now that we”re into practice format, things don”t happen overnight. It takes a lot of work to get a program up to an elite performing program level. So we”re making some first steps, but there”s a ton of work to do.” He emphasized the quality of the roster while also noting the need for continued effort to elevate the program”s status.

During the first day of camp, Kiffin observed a lot of movement among players, although he cautioned against making significant evaluations based solely on initial practices. “A lot of guys moving around out there, different evals, but again we”re wearing helmets, so we don”t make major evaluations off of this,” he added. “I think we put together a good roster of some good talent and a number of positions, but that”s a long ways away from being a really good team.”

LSU secured the top Transfer Portal Class in the nation this offseason, featuring nine players ranked in the Top 100. Among the early enrollees making an impact is five-star defensive lineman Richard Anderson, who signed with the team in December and enrolled early in January. Anderson, who hails from New Orleans” Edna Karr, is considered the top defensive lineman in the 2026 recruiting class and has quickly attracted attention during his first few months in Baton Rouge.

When Anderson joined the Tigers, he stood at nearly 6-foot-3 and weighed around 360 pounds. As of the first day of Spring Camp, he has made significant strides, dropping over 20 pounds and now weighing in at 339 pounds. His impressive physical transformation has not gone unnoticed, and he is expected to be a player to watch as he continues his development with the Bayou Bengals.
