Mike Tomlin poised to become the next iconic NFL analyst like John Madden

The landscape of NFL broadcasting could see a significant shift as Mike Tomlin, the former head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers, is reportedly preparing to venture into media. This comes after he secured representation to explore opportunities in broadcasting.

During a recent segment on Pittsburgh”s sports radio station 93.7 The Fan, NFL insider and NBC Sports personality Mike Florio, known for his insights on Pro Football Talk, discussed Tomlin”s potential in this new role. Florio expressed his belief that Tomlin could become a prominent voice in the industry, akin to the legendary John Madden. “I personally think he could be the next John Madden if he jumps into the booth, but he could be a guy who”s a revelation in the studio as well,” Florio stated, as noted by Alex Kozora of Steelers Depot.

Florio highlighted Tomlin”s natural ability to deliver memorable sound bites, suggesting that his spontaneous remarks during press conferences could translate well to an analyst role. “I think some of his sayings, I don”t know this, I don”t think he”s work-shopping in ahead of time. I don”t think he”s writing it at night. I think he just comes up with it in the moment,” Florio elaborated. This authenticity, he believes, could make Tomlin an outstanding choice for either a booth or studio setting.

The impact of Madden”s distinctive commentary style and his catchphrases helped cement his status as one of the most cherished color commentators in the history of North American sports. Meanwhile, Tomlin”s memorable phrases, often referred to as “Tomlinisms,” have left a lasting impression on fans and analysts alike during his lengthy tenure with the Steelers, which concluded in January 2023.

In February 2025, Andrew Marchand of The Athletic pointed out that Tomlin could potentially become “the next $100M NFL TV analyst.” Florio echoed this sentiment, indicating that networks are eager to provide Tomlin with lucrative offers this offseason. “When you hire the guy that used to represent John Madden, there”s gonna be a financial component that somebody”s gotta be ready to match,” he added. Florio anticipates that all major NFL broadcast partners will be vying for Tomlin”s services, presenting him with robust financial offers before he makes a decision.

It would be unrealistic to expect Tomlin to mimic Madden”s success immediately upon entering the broadcasting arena. However, at just 54 years old, he possesses ample time to develop into one of the leading voices in football for his generation.
