Tasmania to Host AFL Games in Launceston Due to Stadium Delays

The state of Tasmania is preparing for its new AFL team to make its debut, but significant delays in the construction of the new stadium in Hobart will see the majority of games played in Launceston for the time being. Brendon Gale, the CEO of the club, shared this information during an interview on 3AW Football.

According to Gale, the new Hobart stadium is not expected to be completed until 2031, which is three years after the team officially joins the AFL. Despite Hobart being the capital and the largest city in Tasmania, Gale emphasized that Launceston will serve as the primary venue for home games until the stadium is ready.

Gale stated, “It”s fair to say an upgraded UTAS in Launceston will be a superior football venue. It”s probably fair to say we”ll be playing the majority of our games in the intervening years there.” This indicates a clear plan for the team to utilize Launceston”s facilities to engage fans and maintain a competitive presence in the league.

As the region looks forward to its AFL journey, the decision to host games in Launceston reflects both a strategic approach to logistics and the desire to create a strong football culture in Tasmania.
