Kalen DeBoer commented on the performance of Alabama football”s running backs after the team”s initial spring scrimmage. The rushing attack faced significant struggles throughout the challenging 2025 season, increasing the urgency for improvements heading into the upcoming year.
DeBoer noted, “I thought AK (Dear) had a couple of nice runs in there. All of them got to continue to grow and get better.” He highlighted Daniel Hill“s consistency, mentioning that Hill has benefitted from an offseason to improve his physique. Last year”s struggles stemmed from injuries, including surgery that limited his preparation.
DeBoer continued, “EJ”s (Crowell) really not taking a lot of reps, if any at all. And so that”s unfortunate, but we”ll keep working.” Meanwhile, Kevin Riley is building on his performance from the previous season.
In terms of Crowell”s recovery, DeBoer stated, “I”d say it”s week to week. It”s probably not day to day, but it”s week to week, so unfortunately.” Hill is currently listed eight pounds lighter this spring, while Riley gained seven pounds. Last season, Riley registered 227 rushing yards along with touchdowns on 59 attempts, while Hill accumulated 293 yards and six touchdowns on 75 carries.
