NFL Launches Coaching Clinic to Promote Flag Football in Africa

The NFL has taken significant steps to advance flag football across Africa by organizing a coaching clinic at the University of Ghana Rugby Stadium in Accra. This multi-day event gathered coaches from 12 African nations, reflecting the NFL“s collaboration with the International Federation of American Football (IFAF) to foster the sport and bolster grassroots development throughout the continent.

During the clinic, Afia Law, the International Flag Football Development Manager, emphasized the initiative”s long-term goals, which prioritize education and engaging youth. “We have coaches in Accra improving their skills and passing that knowledge on to younger generations in schools, giving them the opportunity to play,” she stated.

Lars Carlsen, the IFAF Sport Manager, commended the dedication displayed by the clinic participants. “They are so enthusiastic about everything, and the coaches are eager to learn,” he remarked. The program attracted prominent officials from the region, including Lawrence Ojaideh, who noted the training”s importance for the participating nations. “Nigeria is preparing for the World Championships, and I will go back to support them with the knowledge gained from this clinic,” he said.

The coaching sessions included a mix of practical and theoretical training, featuring local coaches, educators, and representatives from international federations. Key topics covered included coaching methodologies, understanding the game, and strategies to boost participation in flag football within schools and local communities.

This initiative is part of the NFL“s broader strategy to expand the reach of flag football on a global scale while establishing a sustainable talent pipeline in emerging markets like Africa.
