LAFC and the Vancouver Whitecaps are set to face off for the third consecutive year in the MLS Cup playoffs, igniting discussions about a potential rivalry. Despite their recent playoff encounters, LAFC players have downplayed the notion of a significant rivalry ahead of their Western Conference semifinal matchup on Saturday.
The clash is expected to take place in a charged atmosphere at BC Place, with a full crowd of 55,000 fans anticipating a thrilling contest. Players are aware of the high stakes that the playoffs entail. Midfielder Denis Bouanga addressed the rivalry narrative, stating, “I don”t think there”s any rivalry in a geographic sense. They are a good team, it”s true that we often play against them, but they”re not in particular a rival more than any other team.”
This semifinal will feature international superstars, including Son Heung-min and Thomas Müller, who are expected to make significant impacts for their respective teams. LAFC head coach Steve Cherundolo noted that Müller brings a wealth of experience and leadership to the Whitecaps, enhancing their offensive and defensive play. Cherundolo emphasized the importance of matching Vancouver”s aggressive style to secure a victory.
Bouanga, who has a remarkable record of 13 goals against the Whitecaps, finished the season strong, placing second in the Golden Boot race with 24 goals, just behind Lionel Messi of Inter Miami. He attributed his success against Vancouver to an inexplicable affinity for competing against them, saying, “I can”t really explain it. I like to play them here or at their stadium with their synthetic grass and so on.”
This year”s Whitecaps pose a different challenge with key players like Müller, USMNT midfielder Sebastian Berhalter, and Designated Players Brian White, Ryan Gauld, and Andres Cubas adding depth to their lineup. Cherundolo acknowledged their confidence and the advantage of playing at home, but expressed faith in his team”s ability to perform in high-pressure situations.
For LAFC to emerge victorious, it will be crucial for Bouanga and Son to exploit their contrasting styles of play. Vancouver is likely to dominate possession, particularly with Müller on the field, while LAFC will focus on quick transitions, allowing Bouanga and Son to drift centrally from their wider positions.
Mark Delgado, a midfielder for LAFC, commented on the impact of Son”s addition to the team, stating, “With the addition of Sonny, it just added a lot more quality up front for us. If we can finish our chances, stay well organized throughout the match, communicate really well with one another and just be really disciplined, then I think we”ll be set up for some good things.”
The victor of the LAFC versus Vancouver matchup will advance to the Western Conference final, where they will face the winner of the San Diego FC versus Minnesota United game, scheduled for either November 29 or 30.
