Bills Compete with Raiders for Davis Webb as Head Coach Candidate

The Buffalo Bills are in search of a new head coach following the dismissal of Sean McDermott after their divisional round defeat against the Denver Broncos. One prominent candidate emerging in discussions is Davis Webb, currently serving as the quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator for the Broncos.

As the Bills pursue Webb, they may not be alone in their efforts. NFL insider Adam Schefter recently noted that the Las Vegas Raiders could also be in the mix for Webb”s services. During an appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show,” Schefter stated, “I think in a perfect world, the Raiders would like a young offensive mind as their head coach.”

The Raiders are preparing for a significant decision in the upcoming 2026 NFL Draft, where they are expected to pick Fernando Mendoza, the quarterback from the Indiana Hoosiers, with the first overall selection. This creates an interesting scenario where acquiring a young, innovative coach like Webb could facilitate Mendoza”s development.

Webb has spent his entire coaching career under the tutelage of Sean Payton in Denver, beginning as the quarterbacks coach in 2023. His success in guiding Bo Nix to a finalist position for the 2024 Offensive Rookie of the Year award led to his promotion to the roles he currently holds.

The Raiders face a pressing need for a competent quarterback. Since releasing Derek Carr, the franchise”s all-time leader in passing yards and touchdowns, the team”s scoring offense has struggled significantly. The Raiders ranked 23rd in scoring offense in 2023, 29th in 2024, and 32nd in 2025.

In 2023, the team”s offense averaged 19.5 points per game, which dropped to 18.2 points per game in 2024 and plummeted to 14.2 points per game in 2025. Given these struggles, it is crucial for the Raiders to effectively develop Mendoza. Fortunately, the team has some promising offensive talent, including 2025 first-round running back Ashton Jeanty, who has shown promise, along with 2024 tight end Brock Bowers, who earned All-Pro honors in his rookie season. Additionally, wide receiver Tre Tucker contributed 696 receiving yards last year.

As the competition heats up for Webb, both the Bills and Raiders will be keen to secure his expertise to rejuvenate their respective offenses.
