Bruce Bochy is making a comeback with the San Francisco Giants, taking on a role as a special advisor for both the baseball and business operations. This announcement follows a notable 28-year managerial career, during which Bochy led the Giants to three World Series titles in 2010, 2012, and 2014. The decision was revealed on Monday, reflecting the club”s desire to reinvigorate its direction after missing the playoffs for four consecutive seasons.
Buster Posey, the club”s President of Baseball Operations, expressed his enthusiasm for Bochy”s return, stating he will provide invaluable guidance to the newly appointed manager, Tony Vitello, who previously coached at Tennessee. Bochy”s experience is seen as a crucial asset during this transitional period for the team, especially after parting ways with former manager Bob Melvin after two seasons.
“I couldn”t be more excited to reconnect with the Giants organization and so many familiar faces,” Bochy remarked. “This organization and city mean a lot to me and my family, and I”m grateful for the opportunity to contribute in any way I can.”
Bochy, who is 70 years old, left the Texas Rangers after a successful three-year stint, which culminated in winning their first championship in 2023. His managerial prowess is well-documented, with a career total of 2,252 wins, ranking him sixth in MLB history. He achieved 951 victories with the San Diego Padres and 1,052 with the Giants, making him the only manager in Major League Baseball history to surpass 900 wins with two different franchises.
The Giants, who finished the recent season with an 81-81 record, have not reached the postseason since a strong 2021 campaign where they won the NL West with a franchise-record 107 wins. Bochy”s leadership is expected to provide the necessary insights as the team aims for a return to competitive form.
“Having Boch back in the organization means a great deal to all of us,” Posey stated. “His experience, leadership, and feel for the game are unmatched, and his perspective will be invaluable as we continue building towards sustained success.”
Giants President and CEO Larry Baer also welcomed Bochy back, highlighting his extensive knowledge and connection to the team and its fans. “Few people in baseball have his depth of knowledge, insight, and lived experience of the game. He shares a rich history with our organization and fans, and it”s special to have him back in orange and black,” Baer added.
