Chargers hire Sean Spence as new linebackers coach

The Los Angeles Chargers have announced the hiring of former NFL linebacker Sean Spence as their new linebackers coach. This decision follows the departure of NaVorro Bowman, who left the position to dedicate more time to his family, including his son, who is a notable high school basketball prospect.

According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, Spence, who previously played for teams such as the Steelers, Titans, and Colts, will step into the role after spending the last three seasons coaching at Western Michigan. There, he focused on coaching the edge rushers and had notable success.

During his tenure at Western Michigan, Spence mentored Nadame Tucker, who led the nation in both sacks and tackles for loss in the past season. Tucker”s impressive performance earned him First-Team All-MAC honors and recognition as the MAC Defensive Player of the Year. He was also invited to the Senior Bowl, showcasing his skills among the best senior talent in the country.

Spence will reunite with new Chargers defensive coordinator Chris O”Leary, who played a crucial role in transforming the Broncos defense into one of the top units during the 2025 season. This collaboration is expected to bring a new dynamic to the Chargers” defensive strategy as they aim to improve their performance on the field.

The addition of Spence marks a significant step for the Chargers as they continue to build their coaching staff and enhance their defensive capabilities for the upcoming season.
