Dallas Cowboys to Hire Ryan Smith as Defensive Assistant Coach

The Dallas Cowboys are making strides in enhancing their coaching staff under new defensive coordinator Christian Parker. The team is expected to interview Ryan Smith, currently the cornerbacks coach for the Arizona Cardinals, for a defensive role on Thursday.

According to a report from Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports, Smith is likely to be hired, although the specific title he will hold has not yet been disclosed. Under his guidance, the Cardinals recorded the fewest passing touchdowns allowed in the NFL during the last eleven games of the previous season.

In stark contrast, the Cowboys struggled significantly in the passing defense category, finishing last in the league by permitting an average of 251.5 yards per game. They also allowed 35 passing touchdowns, trailing only the New York Jets, who notably failed to secure an interception in 2025.

Before joining the Cardinals in 2023, Smith served as an assistant under Curt Cignetti at James Madison University. Cignetti recently led his team to an undefeated season and secured the program”s first national championship.

After a disappointing defensive performance in the 2025 season, there is a palpable sense of urgency among Cowboys fans to see improvements in that area. The Cowboys boast a championship-caliber offense, and if Parker can make a quick impact, the team could find itself back in the playoffs after a two-year absence.

Last season, the Cowboys ranked 30th in total defense, allowing an alarming 377 total yards per game, and surrendered a league-high 60 touchdowns overall. Their pass defense ranked dead last in the NFL, while their run defense was also among the less effective units, placing 23rd by allowing 125.5 rushing yards per game and 24 rushing touchdowns.

As the Cowboys gear up for the upcoming season, they are also looking ahead to the 2026 NFL Draft and free agency, aiming to bolster their roster further and enhance their chances for a successful campaign.
