Eric Morris Named Head Coach at Oklahoma State While Remaining with North Texas

Eric Morris has been appointed as the new head coach of Oklahoma State while still leading the North Texas Mean Green. This dual role comes as Morris guides his team in pursuit of a conference championship and a potential berth in the College Football Playoff.

On Tuesday afternoon, Jared Mosley, the athletic director at North Texas, confirmed that Morris informed him of his decision to accept the Oklahoma State position. Mosley expressed gratitude for Morris”s contributions over the past three seasons, stating, “On behalf of the University of North Texas, I want to express our deep gratitude to Eric for everything he has done for Mean Green Football.” He added that Morris is committed to leading the team for the remainder of the season as they aim to conclude this historic year on a high note.

Morris has established a reputation as a talented offensive strategist, emerging as one of the promising figures in college football coaching. His prior success at Incarnate Word showcased his ability to revitalize a program, turning it into a formidable force in the FCS before his tenure at North Texas. As a Texas native, he is expected to excel in recruiting, a critical aspect for Oklahoma State.

“It”s a compliment and means, hey, we”re doing something right around here,” Morris remarked regarding the interest from other universities. “But for me, I have such a good relationship with Jared Mosley here, and then I just love the people I work with every day, so I stay as far away from that stuff. I”m so committed to what”s going on right here, right now.”

Chad Weiberg, the athletic director at Oklahoma State, expressed enthusiasm about Morris”s appointment, stating, “Today begins the next era of Oklahoma State Football. I am thrilled to introduce Eric Morris, his wife Maggie, and their boys Jack and George to the OSU Family.” Weiberg highlighted Morris”s proven track record in building and leading successful football programs, noting his talent in identifying and developing top-tier players.

The coaching transition at Oklahoma State follows a challenging period under former head coach Mike Gundy, who spent over 30 years with the program as a player, assistant coach, and head coach. Gundy”s time as head coach, which began in 2005, saw significant successes, including a Big 12 title in 2011 and multiple bowl appearances. However, recent changes in college football, including the transfer portal and NIL, have posed challenges for maintaining competitiveness.

During his time at North Texas, Morris transformed the Mean Green from a 5-7 record in his inaugural season to a contender for major postseason opportunities. His tenure also saw the team achieve three of the four highest offensive seasons in school history. “For many reasons, including the kind of person he is and the lasting relationships he builds with his players, Coach Morris is the perfect fit as the next leader of Cowboy Football,” Weiberg added, expressing optimism for the future of Oklahoma State Football.

As Morris prepares for this new chapter, North Texas will initiate a nationwide search for his successor immediately, as confirmed by the university.
