In a significant shakeup just weeks before facing his former team, Brian Daboll was relieved of his duties as head coach of the New York Giants. With a record of 2-8 this season and an overall performance of 20-40-1 during his tenure, Daboll”s time with the organization has come to an abrupt end.
Giants owners John Mara and Steve Tisch issued a joint statement explaining the decision, noting, “We spoke this morning about the direction of our franchise on the field, and we have decided that, at this time, it is in our best interest to make a change at the head coaching position. The past few seasons have been nothing short of disappointing, and we have not met our expectations for this franchise. We understand the frustrations of our fans, and we will work to deliver a significantly improved product.”
Daboll, who joined the Giants in 2022, previously held various coaching roles within the NFL. His career began with the New England Patriots in 2000, where he served as a defensive assistant and later as a wide receivers coach. After departing in 2007, he worked with several teams, including the New York Jets, Cleveland Browns, Miami Dolphins, and Kansas City Chiefs. He returned to the Patriots from 2013 to 2016, enhancing his Super Bowl ring collection to five. His most notable success came as the offensive coordinator for the Buffalo Bills, where he was instrumental in developing quarterback Josh Allen and earned the title of Assistant Coach of the Year in 2020.
In his inaugural season with the Giants, Daboll led the team to a 9-7-1 record and secured a playoff berth, garnering accolades including the NFL Coach of the Year. However, he struggled to replicate that success, with the team finishing the following seasons at 6-11 and 3-14, leading to the current disappointing start this year.
With Daboll”s departure, the Giants will now be guided by interim head coach and offensive coordinator Mike Kafka. The team is set to visit Gillette Stadium on December 1 for a Monday Night Football clash against the Patriots, kicking off at 8:15 PM ET.
