As the NFL offseason approaches, Jesse Minter, the defensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Chargers, is expected to attract significant interest for head coaching positions. Despite leading one of the league”s top defenses, Minter did not receive any interviews during the 2025 coaching cycle.
With a stellar defensive performance in his second season, Minter”s prospects for next year appear promising. While formal interview requests have yet to be issued, reports from national NFL journalists suggest potential openings that may consider Minter. Among the teams showing interest are two from the AFC and one from the NFC.
According to Albert Breer from Sports Illustrated, the Las Vegas Raiders could be looking at Minter for their head coaching vacancy. Following a tumultuous season under coach Pete Carroll, the Raiders are poised for another coaching change, having already dismissed Antonio Pierce. Breer highlighted the connections between Minter, minority owner Tom Brady, and general manager Jon Spytek, all of whom share ties to the University of Michigan.
Another AFC team linked to Minter is the Tennessee Titans. Tom Pelissero included Minter on his shortlist for the Titans” coaching search, which also features notable candidates such as Mike McCarthy, Matt Nagy, Jeff Hafley, Robert Saleh, and Chris Shula.
In the NFC, the New York Giants are also seen as a possible landing spot for Minter, according to both Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero. This speculation comes amid uncertainty regarding other coaching positions, including potential changes in Baltimore, Pittsburgh, and Tampa Bay. The Cleveland Browns are expected to move on from Kevin Stefanski.
Minter”s future may hinge on the Chargers” playoff performance. If they advance far enough, it could delay his hiring process. However, if he demonstrates his capabilities during interviews, teams may be willing to wait for him, similar to how the New Orleans Saints were patient with former Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore during his Super Bowl run.
As the Chargers prepare for their upcoming game against the Denver Broncos, the status of their starters remains uncertain. Regardless of the game”s outcome, Minter”s candidacy for head coaching roles is expected to intensify, particularly as the team heads into the Wild Card round next weekend.
