The Detroit Lions have made a significant change to their coaching staff, announcing the termination of offensive coordinator John Morton after just one season. This decision was revealed by the team on Tuesday.
Morton was appointed to the role following the departure of Ben Johnson, who took over as head coach for the Chicago Bears last offseason. Johnson”s tenure with the Bears was impressive, leading the team to an 11-6 record and securing the NFC North title in his first year.
During his time as the Lions” offensive play-caller, Morton oversaw a 5-3 record in the first half of the season. However, after a disappointing loss to the Minnesota Vikings in early November, head coach Dan Campbell assumed the play-calling responsibilities.
Despite the coaching changes, the Lions finished the season with a total record of 9-8 and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2022. Under Morton”s guidance, the Lions ranked fifth in the NFL for total offensive yards. Quarterback Jared Goff ended the season with the second-most passing yards in the league, totaling 4,564 yards, only behind former Lion Matthew Stafford, who now plays for the Los Angeles Rams.
This move reflects the Lions” ongoing efforts to enhance their performance and regain a competitive edge in the league. The next steps for the organization will be closely monitored as they look for a new offensive coordinator to lead their offensive strategy moving forward.
