Memphis Tigers Set to Hire Charles Huff as Head Football Coach

Memphis is nearing the completion of a deal to appoint Charles Huff as its new head football coach, according to sources. The announcement is expected to take place on Saturday, with Huff set to receive a five-year contract.

Huff, who is 42 years old, recently finished his first season with Southern Miss with a record of 7-5. Prior to his time with the Golden Eagles, he led Marshall for four seasons, achieving a notable 10-3 record and clinching a Sun Belt title in 2024.

After winning the conference championship, Huff took the opportunity to move to Southern Miss, which had struggled significantly the prior season, going winless in conference play. However, the team showed improvement in 2025, finishing with a record of 5-3.

The hiring comes as Memphis looks to replace Ryan Silverfield, who recently accepted the head coaching position at Arkansas. During his tenure, Silverfield guided the Tigers to bowl eligibility in six consecutive seasons.

Huff brings a wealth of experience to his new role, having served as an assistant coach under prominent figures such as Nick Saban, James Franklin, Dan Mullen, and P.J. Fleck. His diverse coaching background and recent successes position him as a strong candidate to lead Memphis into a new era.
