Mike Kafka Named Interim Head Coach, Confirms Jameis Winston as Starting QB

On Wednesday, Mike Kafka addressed the media for the first time as the interim head coach of the New York Giants. He quickly confirmed that Jameis Winston will step in as the starting quarterback, replacing Russell Wilson while rookie Jaxson Dart continues to navigate through the concussion protocol. This decision positions Winston to make his regular-season debut as the Giants face the Green Bay Packers this Sunday.

Kafka”s promotion to interim head coach followed the dismissal of Brian Daboll, who had led the team since 2022. Kafka expressed his respect for Daboll, stating, “This is a league of incredibly difficult situations, decisions. I just have the utmost respect for Dabes for what he”s done for me, not only as a friend but as a coach, giving me an opportunity here to be an offensive coordinator.” He added that his thoughts are with Daboll and his family, acknowledging the impact Daboll had on his career.

Reports have indicated that there was significant tension between Kafka and Daboll, which nearly led to Kafka leaving the Giants after the 2023 season. Insider Connor Hughes of SNY noted that Kafka”s play-calling responsibilities were revoked at times during the past season. After the 2023 campaign, the Giants reportedly blocked the Seattle Seahawks from interviewing Kafka for their offensive coordinator position. In February 2024, the Giants added the title of assistant head coach to Kafka”s role, allowing him to continue calling plays in his new capacity.

Speculation arose regarding the timing of Daboll”s firing, particularly following a disappointing loss to the Chicago Bears in Week 10, where the Giants squandered a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter. Kafka hinted that he was surprised by the decision, stating, “I certainly didn”t anticipate it, but it was one of those things, they happen in this league.” He reiterated his appreciation for Daboll”s contributions to his professional development.

While some fans have called for the dismissal of defensive coordinator Shane Bowen, Kafka indicated that he does not foresee any additional coaching changes at this time. He also praised Wilson for his professionalism in accepting his new role as the team”s third-string quarterback behind Winston and a healthy Dart, saying, “The way he responds is unbelievable. I have a ton of respect for Russ.”

Regarding Dart”s status, Kafka provided an update, confirming that he is on track in the concussion protocol. The Giants are currently listed as 7.5-point underdogs at home against the Packers, marking the beginning of Kafka”s opportunity to audition for the full-time head coaching position. When asked what qualities make a great head coach, Kafka responded, “I think the best head coaches I”ve been around are guys that are confident, poised, have a direction, have a plan and then go execute the plan. If something goes just a little bit different, then you go back and you adjust.”
