The Pittsburgh Steelers have announced the addition of Frank Cignetti Jr. to their coaching staff under head coach Mike McCarthy. Cignetti, a native of Pittsburgh, is expected to serve in a senior advisor role, enhancing the team”s coaching capabilities.
Cignetti”s arrival follows his recent dismissal as the offensive coordinator at the University of Pittsburgh, where he spent two seasons. His brother, Curt Cignetti, is the head coach at Indiana University and recently celebrated a National Championship victory.
Born to Frank Cignetti Sr., a respected figure in college football coaching at institutions such as IUP and West Virginia, Cignetti Jr. has a rich football background. He previously worked alongside McCarthy as the quarterbacks coach in New Orleans in the early 2000s and again with the Green Bay Packers in 2018.
Throughout his career, Cignetti has transitioned between the NFL and collegiate football. Most recently, he served as the offensive coordinator at IUP, demonstrating his versatility and depth of knowledge in the game. Although the Steelers have retained Tom Arth as their quarterbacks coach, Cignetti is likely to take on a more senior role, potentially earning the title of “Senior Offensive Assistant,” a designation previously held by quarterback coach Mike Sullivan.
As McCarthy continues to expand his coaching staff, Cignetti”s experience and local connections are expected to contribute significantly to the team”s development. The Steelers are positioning themselves to build a robust coaching framework, one that may surpass the size of previous staffs under former head coach Mike Tomlin.
This strategic hiring aligns with the Steelers” efforts to enhance their performance and cultivate a winning culture in Pittsburgh.
