Rams Special Teams Improvement Crucial for Super Bowl Aspirations

The Los Angeles Rams must enhance their special teams performance if they hope to return to the Super Bowl. Historically, the best teams in the NFL excel across all facets of the game, including offense, defense, and special teams. While the Rams have demonstrated elite capabilities in offense and defense, their special teams unit has been a significant liability, ultimately leading to a disappointing end to their season.

This past season, the Rams” special teams struggled, posting a negative -50 Expected Points Added (EPA). Under head coach Sean McVay, the issue with special teams has been persistent. Since 2020, the Rams have recorded the lowest collective EPA in the league at -169.68, ranking last among all teams. In 2023, their special teams unit had an EPA of -43.68, followed by -12 in 2024, and -50 this season.

Several games this year hinged on poor special teams performance. In week three, the Rams lost to the Eagles due to a blocked field goal by Jordan Davis. A close loss to the 49ers in week five was marked by a missed field goal and an extra point. Another defeat came against the Seahawks, where a 30-14 lead evaporated after Rashid Shaheed returned a 58-yard punt for a touchdown, leading Seattle to a comeback victory.

In an attempt to rectify these issues, McVay fired special teams coordinator Chase Blackburn after the Rams” second matchup with the Seahawks. He was succeeded by Ben Kotwica, but the change came too late to salvage the season. The most pivotal special teams error occurred in the NFC Championship game against the Seahawks. Xavier Smith, the Rams” returner, attempted to catch a poorly kicked punt but muffed it, allowing Seattle to score quickly and secure a 31-27 victory.

To address the ongoing problems, the Rams shifted their starting kicker midway through the season. Initially, they used Joshua Karty, who completed 10 of 15 field goals and 23 of 26 extra points. After week nine, the Rams signed Harrison Mevis to the practice squad and elevated him to the starting role, a move that proved crucial. Mevis finished the season with a remarkable 12 of 13 field goals without missing an extra point.

For next season, the Rams must prioritize the hiring of a competent special teams coordinator to pursue their goal of winning the Lombardi Trophy. When they won the championship in 2021, the Rams overcame a rough start on special teams, rebounding to produce a solid second half that contributed to their success. McVay”s oversight in enhancing this critical phase of the game has hindered the team”s ability to capitalize on championship opportunities.

To fully commit to improving their special teams, the Rams should consider trading for or signing a skilled kick and punt return specialist during the offseason. The Seahawks” acquisition of Shaheed at the trade deadline exemplifies how impactful such a move can be. His addition significantly improved Seattle”s performance and played a key role in their Super Bowl run.
