Rick Garretson Named Head Coach of Servite Football Program

Rick Garretson has been appointed as the new head coach of the Servite varsity football team, marking a significant return to the program he once played for in the 1970s. At 71, Garretson brings a wealth of experience to the role after previously serving as the receivers coach and offensive coordinator at Servite for 16 years.

Garretson”s connection to the school runs deep; he was an All-CIF receiver during his time as a student. His career later took him to Arizona, where he was an assistant coach at Chandler High School before taking the reins as head coach. Over six seasons, he led Chandler to two state championships, further solidifying his reputation as a successful coach.

He takes over from Chris Reinert, who resigned after three seasons in which the Friars finished with a record of 6-5, placing fourth in the six-team Trinity League with a 2-3 league record. In a press release announcing his return, Garretson expressed gratitude to the Servite administration for the opportunity to lead the football program, stating, “I”m looking forward to attacking the challenges and making the most of the opportunities that exist in the Trinity League and continuing the tradition that makes Servite Football and Servite High School so special.”

A key focus for Garretson will likely be player retention, particularly in light of the current trend of transfers in high school football. Notably, Allen “Cinco” Kennett, an All-Trinity League linebacker from the previous season, has recently transferred to Santa Margarita.

Matt Marrujo, the athletic director at Servite, also commented in the press release, saying, “We are thrilled to welcome Coach Garretson back to Servite. As an experienced head coach, he brings the leadership, vision, and commitment necessary to build upon our strong foundation and guide our student-athletes to continued success.” He went on to highlight Garretson”s deep-rooted connection to Servite as a significant asset in his new role.

Garretson comes from a family with a sports background; both his brother Ron and father Darrell were referees in the NBA. Additionally, he played college football at San Diego State, further enhancing his credentials as he steps back into the coaching spotlight.
