The Seattle Seahawks have reportedly chosen their new offensive coordinator, reaching out to the San Francisco 49ers for their run game coordinator and tight ends coach, Brian Fleury, according to NFL Network. This decision comes as a strategic move to bolster the team”s offense under head coach Mike Macdonald.
Fleury stands out as the only significant external candidate the Seahawks considered, successfully securing the position over four internal contenders. His appointment also indicates that the Seahawks will experience some shifts in their offensive staff. Fleury has been with the 49ers for seven seasons, initially joining as a defensive quality control coach in 2019 before transitioning to offensive roles in 2020.
With Fleury”s hiring, the Seahawks will lose their quarterbacks coach, Andrew Janocko, who is set to join the Las Vegas Raiders as their new offensive coordinator, as reported by ESPN”s Adam Schefter. Janocko had been a candidate for the Seattle OC position. He has collaborated closely with new Raiders head coach Gary Kubiak at various previous stops, including the Minnesota Vikings and New Orleans Saints. Janocko followed Kubiak to Seattle, where they developed a championship-caliber offense.
Fleury is expected to take on play-calling duties for the offense, while Macdonald will focus on the defense. Other internal candidates for the Seahawks” offensive coordinator role included pass-game coordinator Jake Peetz, run-game specialist Justin Outten, and tight ends coach Mack Brown. The future of these coaches in Seattle, particularly in assistant roles, remains uncertain.
Although the Raiders expressed interest in interviewing Outten, the Seahawks blocked the request since it was for a lateral position, allowing them to maintain their staff. Peetz was also considered for the offensive coordinator position elsewhere, notably by the Detroit Lions, before they opted for Drew Petzing.
Despite Kubiak”s departure to Las Vegas, Seattle has managed to retain a majority of their coaching staff from the 2025 season. Coaches often follow coordinators or head coaches when they move on, which raises the possibility of more changes to come. The loss of Janocko could signal the start of a coaching turnover, reminiscent of the significant shifts in Seattle”s offensive staff following Ryan Grubb”s firing after the 2024 season.
The Seahawks will look to Fleury to implement an offensive strategy similar to Kubiak”s, making him a fitting choice for Macdonald”s vision. However, this transition may lack the familiarity that comes with promoting from within, adding an element of uncertainty as the team moves forward.
