In a significant development for the Freeport football program, Shaun Arntz has announced his resignation as both the head football coach and athletic director. A lifelong advocate for Freeport, Arntz revealed his decision on X, marking the end of an era for the Bulldogs.
Arntz”s connection to Freeport runs deep, having participated as a three-sport athlete before transitioning through various coaching roles over two decades. He expressed that leading his alma mater for the past nine years has been “the highest honor.” Under his stewardship, the Freeport football team achieved a record of 41-50 without winning a playoff game, with five seasons finishing at .500 or better.
Last season saw the Bulldogs start strong with a 4-0 record, ultimately securing a No. 6 seed in the Region 1-2A playoffs. However, their campaign concluded with a tough loss against South Walton, ending the season at 5-5. As the program looks toward the future, attention will soon turn to the construction of a new state-of-the-art football stadium, a project that promises to enhance the athletic facilities.
Arntz succeeded Freeport coaching legend Jim Anderson in March 2017, after spending nine years as an assistant coach. His tenure has not been without its challenges, particularly in rivalry games against teams in Walton County, a key hurdle for his successor to address.
Throughout his time as athletic director, Arntz played a crucial role in expanding the football program, increasing the number of assistant coaches from four to ten. He described his administrative work as rewarding, emphasizing the support he received from the school”s administration, even as he dedicated long hours to various athletic programs.
Although stepping down, Arntz plans to remain on staff during the transition to a new head coach. He concluded his announcement with optimism for the future, stating, “Exciting times are ahead for our school and football program. Though I won”t be there directly, I”ll always be a Bulldog and wish FHS nothing but success. Our kids and community deserve the best.”
