Steelers Eye Rams” Nate Scheelhaase as Head Coach Candidate

The Pittsburgh Steelers are exploring options for their head coaching vacancy and may look toward the Los Angeles Rams for a potential candidate. NFL Network”s Ian Rapoport recently mentioned Nate Scheelhaase, the Rams” pass game coordinator, as a “wild card” choice for the Steelers.

Rapoport highlighted that while Jesse Minter is a strong contender, Scheelhaase possesses qualities that align with the Steelers” coaching philosophy. “Nate Scheelhaase fits the mold of Mike Tomlin, but on the other side of the ball, a dynamic personality,” Rapoport stated. He emphasized that many believe Scheelhaase could eventually become a successful head coach, even if some question his readiness at this time.

Scheelhaase, a former quarterback at the University of Illinois, transitioned into coaching after a collegiate playing career where he amassed over 8,500 passing yards and 55 touchdowns from 2009 to 2013. Following nearly a decade in college coaching roles at his alma mater and Iowa State, he joined Sean McVay“s staff in Los Angeles as an offensive assistant and pass game specialist in 2024. He was promoted to pass game coordinator this season, significantly contributing to the Rams” offensive achievements, including quarterback Matthew Stafford”s impressive 4,707 passing yards and 46 touchdowns, leading the league in yards per game.

In today”s NFL, teams with head coaches who emphasize offensive strategies often have an edge over those with defensive-minded leaders. Although some skepticism remains regarding Scheelhaase”s experience at the NFL level, Rapoport noted the positive feedback he has received while learning under McVay, acknowledged as one of the league”s top coaches. Scheelhaase is quickly climbing the coaching ranks, and his time to secure a head coaching position appears imminent.

With interview requests already received from the Cleveland Browns and Las Vegas Raiders, it is crucial for the Steelers to conduct thorough evaluations and consider bringing Scheelhaase in for an interview. While hiring him as the next head coach may carry some risks, it could also yield significant rewards for the Steelers as they transition into a new era post-Tomlin.
