In a recent podcast appearance, wide receiver Tyquan Thornton of the Kansas City Chiefs expressed confidence in the New York Giants” decision to hire Matt Nagy as their new offensive coordinator. This move comes after Giants head coach John Harbaugh was left scrambling for a candidate as others opted for different opportunities this offseason.
Thornton suggested that Giants fans who may be skeptical about Nagy will soon come to appreciate his coaching style. He described Nagy as embodying an “AAF” attitude, which he elaborated on by saying Nagy is “very aggressive.” Thornton added, “I love his mindset and what he brings to the table. I”m excited to see what he brings to New York. I love him.”
During the podcast “Talkin” Ball with Pat Leonard,” Thornton explained that “AAF” stands for “aggressive as (expletive),” highlighting Nagy”s intense approach to coaching. This attitude could resonate well with young Giants players like quarterback Jaxson Dart and running back Cam Skattebo, who have shown a fearless style of play in their rookie seasons.
Prior to Nagy”s hiring, the Giants had considered other candidates, including former Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken and former Denver Broncos passing game coordinator Davis Webb. Monken accepted the head coaching position with the Cleveland Browns, while Webb chose to stay with the Broncos after receiving a promotion.
Thornton believes the Giants made the right choice in hiring Nagy. He praised Nagy for his coaching style that allows players to showcase their skills and build confidence. “It was a great opportunity to work with him,” Thornton stated. “He always instilled that confidence. He”s very intentional and hands-on with the quarterbacks. I feel like he”s gonna do great in New York. He”s got an offensive scheme of mind. It was a good fresh start for him to be in New York.”
As for Thornton”s future, he recorded 19 receptions for 438 yards and three touchdowns during the previous season under Nagy. With free agency approaching in March, he expressed interest in continuing to play for Nagy. “I don”t see nobody stopping me in that scheme, if I”m being honest, as humble as I am,” Thornton commented regarding Nagy”s offensive system. “That scheme is everything. And with the skill set that I have, I”m able to go out there and really show what I can do within that scheme.”
The football world will be watching closely to see if Harbaugh decides to bring Thornton on board after the new league year begins on March 11.
