Vikings” Kevin O”Connell Considered Aaron Rodgers Over J.J. McCarthy in 2025

In the lead-up to the 2025 season, Kevin O”Connell, head coach of the Minnesota Vikings, was reportedly contemplating a significant decision regarding the quarterback position. Just months before Aaron Rodgers signed a team-friendly contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers, he expressed interest in joining the Vikings. This came at a time when the team”s 2024 first-round draft pick, J.J. McCarthy, was recovering from a full meniscus repair that had kept him sidelined throughout his rookie season.

According to Matthew Berry of NBC Sports, during this year”s NFL Scouting Combine, it was revealed that O”Connell wanted McCarthy to spend his second professional season learning under the guidance of the future Hall of Famer, Rodgers. Berry noted, “I heard that LAST YEAR coach Kevin O”Connell wanted Aaron Rodgers (and Rodgers was interested in Minnesota), but the overall Vikings organization was not on board, so obviously, Rodgers went to Pittsburgh and the Vikings went with McCarthy.”

Organizational changes within the Vikings have shifted the dynamics, particularly following the unexpected dismissal of general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah in January. ESPN”s Kevin Seifert suggested that O”Connell is expected to gain more authority over personnel decisions this offseason. This could mean O”Connell will have the final say regarding the team”s quarterback situation.

Concerns have emerged this offseason about McCarthy”s readiness, as he has only managed to start 10 regular-season games due to injuries. Meanwhile, reports indicate that the Steelers believe Rodgers is likely to return and play for them this year. Berry echoed this sentiment, stating, “The current expectation is that if he comes back, it would be to return to Pittsburgh.”

The uncertainty surrounding Rodgers has led to speculation about his potential interest in the Vikings once again. As history has shown, the only certainty with Rodgers is that nothing is set in stone until a contract is signed.
