In a thrilling matchup on Wednesday night, the Arizona Wildcats emerged victorious against the No. 23 BYU Cougars, winning 75-68. This game marked a notable shift for Arizona, as they were outscored in the paint for the first time this season while also managing to score more points from beyond the arc.
Tommy Lloyd, the head coach of the Wildcats, acknowledged the unique nature of the win, stating, “We just found a way to win that might not be the normal way we play.” He emphasized the importance of adapting to various styles of play as the season progresses, suggesting that versatility is a key trait for successful teams.
Reflecting on the team”s recent struggles, Lloyd noted, “Gritty win by our guys. We knew it was going to be tough. Obviously, we”re going through injuries right now, and it”s just that point of the season where sometimes you hit a little struggle.” He praised his players for embracing the challenge and controlling the game, particularly in the second half, despite not finishing as strongly as he would have liked.
In the absence of key players Koa Peat and Dwayne Aristode, other team members stepped up significantly. Notably, Anthony Dell”Orso led the Wildcats with 22 points, showcasing his readiness to contribute when needed. “I kept telling you guys, no panic. I think Delly is going to be ready to deliver when we need it most,” Lloyd said, highlighting Dell”Orso”s pivotal role in the game.
Another standout was Ivan Kharchenkov, who quietly scored 18 points while providing strong defensive efforts. Lloyd remarked, “They want to win, and they”re competitors, and then they”re good players.” He pointed out how reduced player numbers sometimes create more opportunities for others to shine.
As for the challenge posed by BYU”s AJ Dybantsa, who scored 35 points, Lloyd admitted the team could have adjusted their defensive strategy but ultimately praised his players for their resilience. “To withstand a player like AJ having 35 points easy and come out on top was a great effort by our guys,” he said.
Looking ahead to their next game against Houston, Lloyd expressed respect for their opponent”s strong identity and challenge. He remains optimistic about his team”s ability to adapt and compete, regardless of who is on the court. “We”re just gonna have five guys put on our uniform and we got to go to battle,” he stated.
Jaden Bradley also shared insights on the team”s preparation for being shorthanded, emphasizing a collective effort to secure victories. He mentioned the importance of rebounding and attacking the paint, acknowledging the game plan adjustments made due to their current roster limitations.
