CSU Rams Suffer Home Defeat Against New Mexico, 80-70

The Colorado State Rams faced a challenging defeat against the New Mexico Lobos, losing 80-70 on Tuesday at Moby Arena. This setback leaves the Rams with a record of 10-5 overall and 1-3 in the Mountain West Conference, while New Mexico improves to 12-3 and 3-1 in league play.

CSU struggled from the start, unable to match the intensity of the Lobos. Head coach Ali Farokhmanesh commented on the team”s slow approach to games, stating, “It”s kind of the same story with all five losses this year. We don”t run into the fight right now.” He emphasized the need for a stronger offensive presence to avoid being overwhelmed by opponents.

The contest began with a competitive first five minutes, featuring three ties and two lead changes. However, a three-pointer from Antonio Chol established a lead for New Mexico that they would not relinquish. The Lobos surged ahead, reaching a seven-point advantage before the Rams narrowed the gap to just two points at 21-19 following a layup from Brandon Rechsteiner.

New Mexico countered with an 8-0 run, stretching their lead to 29-19. They maintained the upper hand, closing the first half with a score of 39-30, despite CSU shooting 48 percent compared to New Mexico”s 45.5 percent. Augustinas Kiudulas led the Rams in the opening half with 11 points, contributing to CSU”s edge in rebounds, as they outpaced the Lobos 17-15.

Kiudulas finished the game with a team-high 20 points, demonstrating significant improvement as he fills in for the injured Kyle Jorgensen and Rashaan Mbemba. Farokhmanesh praised Kiudulas for his adaptability to new roles within the team”s offense as they cope with injuries.

After halftime, CSU managed to cut the deficit to 43-39, but that was as close as they would get. New Mexico regained control with a three-pointer from Chol, extending their lead to 55-44. The Lobos continued to dominate, with a turnaround jumper from Deyton Albury resulting in their largest second-half lead at 57-44. The Rams struggled to close the gap, never getting within eight points again.

Kiudulas remarked on the team”s need to improve their starts, asserting, “We”ve just got to start off strong because I feel like the way we started is going to set the tone for the game.” Alongside Kiudulas, Jase Butler contributed 14 points and Rechsteiner added 13.

Both teams recorded 32 rebounds, with Carey Booth leading CSU with six. The Rams will look to rebound on Friday when they host UNLV at 8 PM at Moby Arena.
