A notable name in college football is set to make his mark at the next level. Travis Johnson II, the son of former NFL defensive lineman Travis Johnson, has announced his commitment to Schreiner University, a Division III institution in Texas. This decision follows his time at Episcopal, where he showcased his skills as a linebacker.
During his senior season, Johnson II recorded 39 tackles, four tackles for loss, and two sacks across 11 games, according to MaxPreps.com. In a heartfelt message shared on social media, he expressed, “After careful consideration, I am proud to say that I am committed to Schreiner University! Thank you to all coaches who helped me get to this point and all who recruited me! And an extreme thank you to my parents and family for providing for me with things to help me be my greatest self! Go Mountaineers!”
Schreiner University is in the process of reviving its football program, with Johnson II being part of the inaugural class set to join in 2026. The Mountaineers last fielded a football team in 1950. In the previous year, the team had a developmental phase where they achieved a record of 5-1 as they gradually built up their football program for the upcoming season.
Despite not receiving an offer from Florida State, Johnson II attended an FSU camp in June 2024. Before settling on Schreiner, he had offers from Fresno State, Millsaps, and Howard Payne.
The elder Johnson had an impressive collegiate career with the Seminoles from 2000 to 2004 under the legendary head coach Bobby Bowden. Over his four years in Tallahassee, he racked up 175 tackles, 43.5 tackles for loss, 10 sacks, six forced fumbles, and 31 quarterback hurries throughout 48 games. His outstanding performance earned him a First-Team All-American designation in his final year, and he also received first-team All-ACC honors before being selected 16th overall by the Houston Texans in the first round of the 2005 NFL Draft.
Johnson”s career in the NFL spanned six years, during which he played in 76 games, starting 38 of them.
