Illinois and Wisconsin Face Off in Big Ten Tournament Quarterfinals

The excitement of college basketball”s postseason is upon us as Illinois prepares to face Wisconsin in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals. This matchup features the No. 4 seed Illini against the No. 5 seed Badgers, with the game set to broadcast on the Big Ten Network at 1:30 PM CT on Friday at the United Center in Chicago. Wisconsin recently secured an 85-82 victory over the No. 12 seed Washington, establishing a highly anticipated rematch with Illinois, who earned a triple bye into the tournament.

The previous encounter between these two teams ended with Wisconsin edging out Illinois 92-90 in overtime on February 10 in Champaign. This close loss may serve as additional motivation for the Illini to seek revenge in this postseason clash.

One key aspect to watch will be the performance of Wisconsin”s starting backcourt, which poses a significant challenge for Illinois. In their earlier meeting, Nick Boyd and John Blackwell combined for an impressive 49 points while shooting 50% from beyond the arc. During the overtime period, they were instrumental, contributing nine of Wisconsin”s 11 points as the Illini struggled to contain their dynamic play. Their recent outing saw them elevate their game even further, tallying 57 points and hitting 11 three-pointers against Washington, showcasing their ability to perform under pressure.

Illinois has the defensive tools to counter Wisconsin”s offensive threats, particularly with Kylan Boswell being named to the Big Ten All-Defensive team. The Illini”s defensive strategy will be critical in matching up against Boyd and Blackwell”s explosive scoring capabilities.

Another crucial factor is rebounding, an area where Washington nearly capitalized against Wisconsin. The Huskies dominated the boards, out-rebounding the Badgers 45-29, including a remarkable 19 offensive rebounds. With Hannes Steinbach, the Big Ten”s leading rebounder, Illinois will aim to leverage their rebounding strength, as they average 39.5 total rebounds and 13 offensive rebounds per game.

Wisconsin”s rebounding issues were partly due to the absence of Nolan Winter, a 6-foot-11 junior who has been sidelined with a lower-body injury. Winter, who leads the team in rebounds and is a vital scoring option, has not played in the last two games. In his absence, Wisconsin has shifted to a lineup featuring 6-foot-10 forward Austin Rapp, who brings scoring ability, and Aleksas Bieliauskas, known for his rebounding and defensive presence. If Winter remains unavailable, freshman Will Garlock may also see increased minutes to help fill the void in the frontcourt.

Head coach Greg Gard has not confirmed Winter”s status for the game against Illinois but expressed confidence that increased playing time for Rapp and Bieliauskas will benefit the team, particularly when Winter returns to action.
