Jaylen Mbakwe, a former standout receiver for Alabama, has announced his commitment to Georgia Tech. The talented player spent two seasons with the Crimson Tide before deciding to transfer.
Originally a five-star recruit from Clay-Chalkville, Mbakwe transitioned to receiver prior to the ReliaQuest Bowl last season after primarily playing as a defensive back throughout the majority of 2024. In 2025, he served mainly as a backup receiver while also contributing on special teams and in the return game.
During his sophomore year, Mbakwe recorded three receptions for 55 yards. He was recognized as the No. 3 player in the state and the No. 12 player nationally in the 2024 recruiting class, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings. His decision to transfer comes after he initially chose to remain with the Crimson Tide.
The transfer portal officially opened on Friday and will remain accessible until January 16. This window is the only opportunity for players to enter the portal before the 2026 season. While players do not need to finalize their new school before the portal closes, they must ensure their names are entered before the deadline.
Brent Key, the head coach at Georgia Tech, previously served as an assistant coach at Alabama, which could have influenced Mbakwe”s decision to join the Yellow Jackets. As the transfer portal continues to change the landscape of college football, Mbakwe”s move is another notable development as teams seek to strengthen their rosters for the upcoming season.
