North Texas experienced a shocking defeat at home on Thursday night, letting a 15-point second-half lead slip away in a 77-71 loss to Tulane. The game, held at the Super Pit, saw the Mean Green struggle down the stretch, failing to score for the final 2:46 of play.
UNT appeared to be on the right track heading into this matchup, but the situation changed dramatically in the closing moments. After David Terrell Jr. put North Texas ahead 71-69 with a layup, the Green Wave responded with an 8-0 run. Curtis Williams Jr. tied the game shortly after, and Chace Ringgold gave Tulane the lead with another layup with 1:33 remaining. From that point, UNT was unable to recover, marking the end of their three-game winning streak.
For much of the contest, the teams were neck and neck, but North Texas began to pull away with a strong second-half performance highlighted by a 15-2 run. Reece Robinson ignited the surge with a dunk, followed by Je”Shawn Stevenson who hit a rare four-point play—making a three-pointer and converting a foul shot. Terrell later added a pair of free throws, extending the lead to 59-44.
However, the Green Wave managed to rally back, launching an 11-0 run that tied the game thanks to a three-pointer from Asher Woods. Terrell finished as the leading scorer for North Texas with 21 points, while Stevenson added 20 points to the tally. The defeat serves as a stark reminder of the volatility of college basketball, where leads can evaporate in moments.
