Queen”s Gaels Aim for Fast Start Against Top-Ranked Laurier in 117th Yates Cup

On Saturday, the Queen”s Gaels will compete in the 117th Yates Cup, the championship game of the Ontario University Athletics, against the undefeated Laurier Golden Hawks at University Stadium in Waterloo. This marks Queen”s return to the title match for the first time since 2022, with the program having won the trophy 23 times, the last victory occurring in 2009.

Ranked No. 1 by USports since mid-September, Laurier poses a significant challenge for the Gaels, especially after their dominant 60-13 victory over the Western Mustangs, who were ranked No. 2 at the time. Earlier in the season, Laurier defeated Queen”s 47-32, establishing a formidable reputation as they head into this championship clash.

Despite their underdog status, the Gaels have shown resilience, particularly in road games, boasting a perfect 5-0 record away from home in 2025. Head coach Steve Snyder has credited this success to a “business-trip mentality” which fosters greater focus when traveling.

“When we travel, it definitely demands an extra level of focus that our program embraces,” Snyder stated. “There”s legitimate resiliency with this group. It”s a testament to their character.”

Queen”s impressive performances in their last two road games further bolster their confidence. Last week, they mounted a second-half comeback to defeat the Windsor Lancers 36-25, a stark contrast to their earlier loss against Windsor at home, where the size of the Lancers” linemen had dominated. In that rematch, adjustments by the Gaels allowed them to neutralize the size advantage and win the physical battle.

In another significant away game, Queen”s overcame the Guelph Gryphons 27-17. Initially perceived as a lesser opponent, Guelph later proved their mettle by defeating Western and keeping the score respectable against Laurier in the Yates Cup semi-final.

In their earlier matchup against Laurier, the Gaels struggled to maintain offensive balance after falling behind early. Laurier”s first-year quarterback, Cal Wither, connected on an 81-yard touchdown pass, giving the Hawks a lead they would not relinquish. Queen”s quarterback Alex Vreeken ended up attempting 50 passes, which disrupted their ground game, limiting leading rusher Jared Chisari to just nine carries.

To have a chance in the championship, Snyder emphasized the importance of a quick start. “I think we have to start fast. It”s critical for us. Laurier”s an explosive team. We have to get them out of their rhythm and limit their explosive plays,” he explained.

Special teams will also play a crucial role in the game, given Laurier”s strength in this area, highlighted by Tayshaun Jackson”s notable 97-yard punt return for a touchdown in their previous meeting. “Special teams is a priority every week, but this week in particular, just because of how great they are on specials,” Snyder noted. “We have to find good match-ups.”
