The No. 22 Texas A&M Aggies experienced another heartbreaking loss against the No. 9 Oklahoma Sooners, suffering a 12-11 defeat in their opening series of the SEC season. This marks the second time in three days that the Aggies let a close game slip away, following a similar pattern as their prior loss on Friday night.
In a game that was tightly contested, Texas A&M entered the bottom of the eighth inning tied with Oklahoma. Unfortunately for the Aggies, the Sooners managed to score the decisive run, sealing Texas A&M”s fate. With this result, the Aggies” season record stands at 16-3 (1-2 SEC), which could lead to their removal from the upcoming D1Baseball rankings.
The game began poorly for Aiden Sims, who struggled on the mound and allowed two runs to score during the eighth inning, with one run attributed to a throwing error. The second inning proved to be even worse for Texas A&M, as they conceded four runs, two of which came from a ball that was heavily influenced by the fierce winds in Norman, eluding the grasp of Chris Hacopian. This error gave the Sooners a 6-0 lead by the end of the second inning.
Texas A&M finally got on the scoreboard in the top of the third, scoring four runs thanks to RBI singles from Terrence Kiel II, Caden Sorrell, and Jake Duer. However, the Sooners quickly responded with a two-run home run from Trey Gambill in the bottom of the same inning, extending their lead back to four runs. Sorrell and Boston Kellner each contributed with RBI singles in the fourth and fifth innings, narrowing the gap to two runs.
Both teams exchanged runs in the sixth and seventh innings, with Oklahoma taking an 11-7 advantage after scoring two more runs in the bottom of the seventh, seemingly putting the game out of reach. Nevertheless, the Aggies fought back valiantly, with Sorrell and Duer hitting two-RBI doubles that tied the game at 11 runs each.
Just as in their previous contest, the Sooners found a way to clinch the game in the bottom of the eighth. Camden Johnson drew a walk with the bases loaded, allowing the go-ahead run to score. The Aggies could not respond in the ninth as Bear Harrison, Kellner, and Kiel were retired in order, concluding their first SEC series of the year.
Grant Cunningham took the loss for Texas A&M after issuing the decisive walk. The Maroon and White will aim to correct their mistakes over the weekend when they host the Texas State Bobcats on Tuesday night in College Station.
