UCLA Upsets No. 4 Purdue with Last-Second Three-Pointer

In a thrilling college basketball showdown, UCLA claimed a vital victory against No. 4 Purdue, winning 69-67 on Tuesday night. The game was highlighted by a clutch three-pointer from Tyler Bilodeau with just eight seconds remaining, marking a significant upset for the Bruins.

Following a disappointing 12-point loss to Ohio State the previous weekend, UCLA coach Mick Cronin called out players Donovan Dent, Eric Dailey Jr., and Bilodeau in front of their teammates, urging them to elevate their performance. “I think we all responded right away, even before we got on the plane after he got on us,” Dent stated.

Dent led the Bruins with an impressive performance, scoring 23 points and dishing out 13 assists, including the setup for the game-winning shot. Bilodeau contributed 14 points, while Dailey added 12 points and seven rebounds. Dailey reflected on Cronin”s tough love approach, saying, “He”s not doing it to drag us, he”s doing it to challenge us.” The Bruins, now 13-6 overall and 5-3 in the Big Ten, ended Purdue”s nine-game winning streak, a feat made even more remarkable considering their defensive struggles this season.

This victory is particularly important for UCLA, who previously fell short against ranked teams such as then-No. 5 Arizona and then-No. 8 Gonzaga, as well as then-No. 25 Iowa. The Bruins have faced challenges, including the absence of guard Skyy Clark, who has missed five straight games due to a hamstring injury, forcing teammates to step up their game.

As the team looks to secure a spot in the NCAA Tournament, Dent expressed optimism about the future, saying, “We know how good of a team we have, just which one of us shows up that night.” He acknowledged a pattern of inconsistency but believes the win against Purdue can serve as a springboard for success moving forward.

Cronin”s emphasis on performance was evident as he addressed Dent”s play style. “You got to perform,” he told Dent. “You can”t stand around when your team needs you.” The coach also praised Bilodeau”s defensive efforts, highlighting the importance of fighting for every play.

The Bruins now have a crucial month and a half ahead to solidify their position and avoid the NCAA Tournament bubble. With this victory, they have renewed hope as they strive for a strong finish to the season.

Cronin did not hold back in his criticism of the Big Ten”s scheduling, which placed five of UCLA”s first seven league games on the road. He pointed out the disadvantage his team faced after playing in Ohio, while Purdue had rested at home since their last game against USC on Saturday. “I want to thank the Big Ten for that,” Cronin remarked, adding, “I don”t think they care about basketball.”
