KANSAS CITY, Mo. — In a thrilling display of resilience, the Kansas City Chiefs staged a comeback to defeat the Indianapolis Colts 23-20 in overtime on November 23. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes shone with a season-high 352 passing yards, while running back Kareem Hunt contributed 104 rushing yards and a touchdown. The game concluded with Harrison Butker kicking his fifth field goal — a 27-yarder — with less than two minutes remaining in the extra period.
Wide receiver Rashee Rice was instrumental, making eight catches for 141 yards. His crucial receptions included two during the Chiefs” game-tying touchdown drive in regulation and another pivotal catch in overtime, following a remarkable defensive stand that forced the Colts to punt on four consecutive possessions.
The Chiefs, now at 6-5, were fighting to keep their playoff hopes alive after suffering two consecutive losses. A defeat against the Colts, who boasted an 8-3 record and were one of the league”s hottest teams, would have left them in a precarious position for postseason contention.
The Colts, on the other hand, squandered a 20-9 lead in the fourth quarter, a collapse that was exacerbated by questionable play-calling and execution. They opted to reduce their reliance on star running back Jonathan Taylor, who only had 16 carries for 58 yards. Quarterback Daniel Jones finished the game with 181 passing yards and two touchdowns, but his performance dipped in the second half, where he managed only 83 yards on 8 of 18 passing.
In the first half, the Chiefs struggled with turnovers, including an interception thrown by Mahomes after a pass was batted at the line of scrimmage. This turnover led to an early touchdown for the Colts, who built a 7-0 lead. The Chiefs responded with two lengthy drives that resulted in field goals but fell behind as the Colts scored again to take a 14-3 advantage into halftime.
As the game progressed, the Colts maintained a 20-9 lead heading into the fourth quarter, but Mahomes orchestrated another comeback, driving the team 56 yards for a touchdown by Hunt. A successful 2-point conversion to Rice brought the Chiefs within three points.
With under five minutes left, the Chiefs” defense stepped up, limiting the Colts to three-and-outs. Kansas City capitalized on their next possession, beginning from their own 6-yard line and advancing to the Colts” 2 before Butker tied the game with a field goal as time expired in regulation.
In overtime, the Chiefs continued their momentum, leading to Butker”s game-winning kick. The Colts will face the Texans next Sunday, while the Chiefs are set to visit the Cowboys on Thursday.
