San Francisco 49ers defensive lineman Keion White was shot in the ankle in an incident that occurred shortly after Super Bowl LX concluded on Sunday. The shooting took place early Monday morning in San Francisco, prompting White to undergo surgery later that day.
The team confirmed that White”s surgery was successful and that his injuries are not expected to threaten his career. The 49ers have stated that they will provide updates as more information becomes available.
According to the San Francisco Police Department, officers responded to reports of a shooting around 4:06 AM local time on Mission Street. Upon arrival, they discovered a victim with an apparent gunshot wound. Officers rendered assistance before paramedics transported the victim to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
A preliminary investigation indicated that a verbal dispute erupted between two groups inside a business prior to the shooting. The police noted that an unknown suspect fired the shots that injured White. No arrests have been made as the investigation remains ongoing, led by the SFPD”s Strategic Investigation Unit.
On the day of the shooting, White had shared photos and videos on his Instagram from his attendance at Super Bowl LX at Levi”s Stadium in Santa Clara, where he watched his former team, the New England Patriots, lose to the Seattle Seahawks.
The 49ers acquired White via trade on October 29, sending a 2026 sixth-round pick to New England in exchange for White and a 2026 seventh-round selection. During his time with San Francisco, including playoff games, he played in 11 games, starting in two, and recorded 16 tackles, 2.5 sacks, one fumble recovery, and three tackles for loss while playing as both a defensive end and tackle.
This incident marks the second shooting involving a 49ers player in the last 18 months. In August 2024, wide receiver Ricky Pearsall was shot during a robbery attempt but has since made a full recovery and participated in 11 games of his rookie season.
