Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers has stated that in order to participate in the upcoming game against the Chicago Bears, he must be capable of “protecting” himself on the field. As he prepares for the matchup, both Kimberley A. Martin and Jeff Saturday believe that Rodgers will take every measure necessary to play.
On Wednesday afternoon, Rodgers expressed optimism about his recovery, noting, “It feels better than it did Sunday, that”s for sure.” He emphasized the importance of rehabilitation, saying, “I was thankful to get today to work with Gabe and just focus on rehab for today. Trying to get back on the field tomorrow and see what I can do.”
However, the timeline for confirming his participation in the Steelers” Week 12 game against the Bears remains uncertain. “It”s a safety thing,” he remarked, dismissing the idea that his decision to play would hinge solely on pain management. When asked if his availability might be determined just before the game, Rodgers referred to head coach Mike Tomlin, who indicated that Friday would be a crucial day in the evaluation process.
Rodgers was also asked if there was extra motivation for him to play against the Bears, given his storied history with the team. He responded, “There”s incentive for every opponent, but I have enjoyed many a Sunday and Monday and Thursdays in that city.” He holds an impressive 24-5 record in regular-season games against the Bears and added, “It”s a great sports town, phenomenal sports fans and great place to play.”
When questioned about his role in the rivalry, Rodgers smiled and said, “I”d rather not be, I mean I”m not in Green Bay anymore. I feel like we can let bygones be bygones.” He noted the competitive nature of the Bears-Packers rivalry, reflecting on how the series shifted during his time in Green Bay.
Regarding his injury, Rodgers explained that the Steelers” medical team is “working through” finding a suitable brace for his injured wrist, which is on his non-throwing hand. He mentioned that it is currently more comfortable for him to take snaps from the shotgun formation but aims to also take snaps under center. “I would say it”d be more difficult to take a snap under center than to catch one in the gun,” he said.
Rodgers clarified that his current injury is not a re-aggravation of a previous issue and occurred during a second-down play late in the second quarter against the Bengals. He fell awkwardly on his wrist while under pressure. Although he managed to play one more snap before halftime, he did not return after the break due to significant pain.
In his absence, backup quarterback Mason Rudolph stepped in and performed admirably, completing 12 of 16 attempts for 126 yards and a touchdown. On Wednesday, Rudolph took first-team practice reps and has been preparing as if he might start.
Rodgers praised Rudolph, saying, “He”s a great backup. He”s super helpful during the week. He”s a professional. He is ready to play.” He acknowledged Rudolph”s attention to detail in preparation, noting, “He”s a lot more type A, I would say, than I am with the preparation.” Rudolph has experience stepping into the starting role unexpectedly and is prepared to do so again if needed.
Reflecting on his experience, Rudolph stated, “I got plenty of experience going back and forth in different roles… I just say, “Screw it,” and I just roll with the punches.”
