The 2026 NFL offseason has commenced, and Aaron Rodgers finds himself a free agent once again. This scenario seems familiar, as last year he kept multiple teams in suspense for months before ultimately signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers in June.
This time, however, teams searching for a quarterback may not exercise the same level of patience. The Steelers have already reached out to the four-time MVP, setting the stage for a potential reunion with former head coach Mike McCarthy, a connection forged during their days together in Green Bay. Such a reunion could be a compelling narrative, especially if Rodgers” age—turning 42—does not hinder his performance on the field. Before any of this can unfold, though, Rodgers needs to confirm his return, followed by the Steelers approving a deal.
When it comes to the likelihood of these developments, NFL insider Tom Pelissero suggests the odds are favorable, with an announcement possibly coming as early as March 11, coinciding with the start of the new league year. “Unlike last year when Aaron delayed his decision until right before the OTAs in June, I expect that he will need to make a choice soon. This process likely begins around the start of the league year,” Pelissero stated during an appearance on The Rich Eisen Show.
Pelissero shared that Rodgers and McCarthy have held multiple conversations in recent weeks, discussing football and the prospect of a reunion in Pittsburgh. Ultimately, Pelissero emphasized that the final decision rests solely with Rodgers. “This is Aaron Rodgers. He has to decide for himself. Only he understands his situation and his thoughts. He tends to go off the grid for a week or two to reflect,” the NFL Network analyst added.
Interestingly, Pelissero also indicated that this offseason could signify the end of Rodgers” time in Pittsburgh, especially following Mike Tomlin“s resignation. Nevertheless, he acknowledged that if McCarthy were to be hired by the Steelers, Rodgers would seriously contemplate a return. “He is definitely showing interest… When Tomlin stepped down, it seemed like that might be the end for Aaron… However, I mentioned on this show that if there was one coach Aaron would be willing to play for again, despite past tensions, it would be Mike McCarthy. They remain close.”
Pelissero further remarked on how Rodgers felt somewhat out of place last year, particularly with offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, someone with whom he had no prior experiences. But with McCarthy”s hiring, that perception may shift. “This is Mike McCarthy. This is Aaron returning to his roots. It forms the basis of how he plays quarterback,” Pelissero noted.
He concluded by suggesting that the Steelers will likely have clarity on Rodgers” situation before free agency commences. “I anticipate they will know one way or another. If they are still uncertain by then, they will need to explore other options. Will Howard is certainly part of those considerations. But I concur with you, Rich. As I mentioned on Super Bowl Sunday, the chances are increasing that Aaron Rodgers returns. I do not see him playing anywhere else. If he decides to continue his career, it will likely be with the Pittsburgh Steelers.”
It appears that the only factor that might complicate a reunion between Rodgers and McCarthy would be any lingering resentment from their time in Green Bay. However, indications suggest that is not the case, making a reunion more probable. As Pelissero indicated, we could see developments as soon as March 11.
