Asante Samuel Jr Signs with Steelers Following Chargers Departure

The Los Angeles Chargers have seen their former second-round draft pick, Asante Samuel Jr, sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers following an unconventional exit from the team. Samuel, who was selected by the Chargers in 2021, had a promising three-year run that included six interceptions and 35 passes defended. However, his 2024 season was marred by injury; he managed to play only four games before being placed on injured reserve due to a shoulder issue.

Despite his struggles, Samuel was considered one of the top free agents entering the offseason but remained unsigned until now, partly due to a spinal-fusion surgery that further delayed his return to the field. He officially signed with the Steelers” practice squad on Tuesday, just two days after the Chargers defeated the Steelers 25-10.

Former Chargers star Shawne Merriman, who was drafted in the first round in 2005, expressed his support for Samuel”s new opportunity. Merriman acknowledged the long and challenging road Samuel has faced in his recovery and noted that he now joins a Steelers secondary that is in dire need of assistance.

During the offseason, the Chargers opted to bolster their defense by signing Donte Jackson to a two-year contract worth $13 million, naming him their top cornerback. They are also relying on second-year cornerback Cam Hart to start alongside Jackson, with Derwin James and Tarheeb Still filling the nickel position. Jackson”s performance has been commendable, with two interceptions and seven passes defended, while maintaining a career-best completion percentage of 43.3 when targeted.

The decision for the Chargers to part ways with Samuel seems to have ultimately benefited both parties, allowing Samuel to find a fresh start with the Steelers.
