Auburn has announced that freshman quarterback Deuce Knight will make his first career start against Mercer this Saturday. The decision was revealed by interim head coach DJ Durkin on Thursday, following the news that quarterback Ashton Daniels would not participate in the game to maintain a year of eligibility.
Daniels is anticipated to return to the starting role next week for the highly anticipated matchup against No. 10 Alabama in the Iron Bowl rivalry. “He”s earned it,” Durkin stated regarding Knight”s promotion. “He”s done a great job, and we”re excited to see him go play.”
Although Knight has had limited opportunities this season, he did see some action against Ball State, completing 2 of 5 passes for 20 yards while also rushing for 16 yards. Knight was selected as the starter over Jackson Arnold, who has appeared in nine games this season, throwing for 1,278 yards with six touchdowns and two interceptions. However, both quarterbacks are expected to see the field during the game.
“They”re both going to play in the game, and they”re both going to play well,” Durkin added. “They”re both prepared, and we have a good plan for both of them.”
This matchup against Mercer represents a crucial moment for Knight, who aims to make a significant impact in his inaugural start. With the Iron Bowl looming, the performance against Mercer could set the tone for the rest of the season.
