BC Lions Extend Contract for Kicker Sean Whyte for Another Year

The BC Lions have announced that kicker Sean Whyte, a native of White Rock, will continue with the team for at least one more season. Whyte, who excelled in the Canadian Football League (CFL) last year, achieved a remarkable field goal success rate of 95.1 percent by converting 39 of 41 attempts in 2025.

This upcoming season will mark Whyte”s eighth with the Lions and his 18th in the CFL overall. At 40 years old, he expressed his enthusiasm about staying with the team he loves. “It”s fantastic. I didn”t think I”d play for this long… to play for my hometown and just to see the excitement with my family — it”s pretty cool,” Whyte stated on January 7. “I don”t want to go anywhere else. I just feel very lucky that I get an opportunity to keep playing the game I love. Very lucky.”

Last season, Whyte further solidified his legacy in the league, starting 2026 as the all-time leader in field goal accuracy at 88.8 percent with 557 successful kicks out of 627 attempts across 241 regular season games. He ranks ninth in both career points scored, with 2,282, and field goals made in CFL history.

Since rejoining the Lions before the 2022 season, Whyte has converted 175 of 186 field goal attempts, maintaining a 94.0 percent success rate. He has led the CFL in field goal percentage for three consecutive years and earned nominations as the West Division nominee for CFL Most Outstanding Special Teams Player, as well as All-CFL selections in both the 2023 and 2024 seasons, according to the Lions” announcement.

With 828 points scored as a Lion from his time in 2009-10 and 2022 to the present, Whyte is third on the franchise”s all-time scoring list, trailing only CFL Hall of Fame inductees Lui Passaglia and Paul McCallum.

Before his current stint with the Lions, Whyte played for the Montreal Alouettes from 2011 to 2014 and received East Division All-CFL honors during his third year with the team. He then spent six seasons with the Edmonton Eskimos, where he established himself as one of the premier kickers in the CFL, contributing to the team”s Grey Cup victory in 2015 while achieving a field goal conversion rate of 90.2 percent.

Looking ahead, Whyte is determined to enhance his performance even further. “My goal this year is just to get stronger. This offseason I”m really going to train hard,” he remarked. “I still have the fire in me to compete and playing at home for the BC Lions… there”s nothing better.”
