The BC Lions have officially announced a one-year contract extension for their kicker, Sean Whyte, ensuring he will continue to play for his hometown team in the Canadian Football League for at least another season. The 40-year-old, who hails from White Rock, had an impressive season in 2025, achieving a career-high field goal percentage of 95.1 by successfully converting 39 out of 41 attempts.
This marks Whyte”s eighth season with the Lions and his 18th overall in the CFL. He expressed his satisfaction with the contract extension, stating, “It”s fantastic. I didn”t think I”d play for this long … to play for my hometown and just to see the excitement with my family — it”s pretty cool.” Whyte added, “I don”t want to go anywhere else. I just feel very lucky that I get an opportunity to keep playing the game I love. Very lucky.”
As he heads into the 2026 season, Whyte holds the record for the highest field goal accuracy in CFL history, boasting an impressive 88.8 percent success rate after making 557 of 627 attempts across 241 regular season games. His total of 2,282 career points and 557 field goals rank him ninth on the all-time list in the CFL. Since rejoining the Lions in 2022, Whyte has maintained a 94.0 percent conversion rate, leading the league in field goal percentage for three consecutive years.
In addition to his individual accolades, Whyte was nominated for the CFL Most Outstanding Special Teams Player and earned All-CFL honors in both the 2023 and 2024 seasons. With 828 points scored during his time with the Lions, he ranks third on the franchise”s all-time scoring list, following notable players Lui Passaglia and Paul McCallum.
Before his current tenure with the Lions, Whyte played for the Montreal Alouettes from 2011 to 2014, where he was recognized with East Division All-CFL honors. He then spent six seasons with the Edmonton Eskimos, further solidifying his reputation as one of the league”s elite kickers, contributing to a Grey Cup victory in 2015 with a field goal success rate of 90.2 percent.
Looking ahead, Whyte is determined to push himself even further, saying, “My goal this year is just to get stronger. This offseason I”m really really going to train hard. I still have the fire in me to compete and playing at home for the BC Lions … (there”s) nothing better.” With his contract extension, Whyte aims to continue his legacy with the Lions and contribute to the team”s success in the upcoming season.
