BC Lions Extend Contract with Kicker Sean Whyte for Another Year

BC Lions kicker Sean Whyte, a native of White Rock, has secured a one-year contract extension with his hometown team in the Canadian Football League (CFL). This agreement ensures that the veteran kicker will continue to represent the Lions for at least one more season.

In 2025, Whyte achieved remarkable success, leading the league with a career-high field goal percentage of 95.1%, successfully converting 39 out of 41 attempts. Additionally, he was named a West Division All-CFL selection for the third consecutive year. This upcoming season marks Whyte”s eighth with the Lions and his 18th overall in the CFL. The 40-year-old expressed his contentment with remaining in his hometown, stating, “It”s fantastic. I didn”t think I”d play for this long… to play for my hometown and just to see the excitement with my family — it”s pretty cool.” He added, “I don”t want to go anywhere else. I just feel very lucky that I get an opportunity to keep playing the game I love. Very lucky.”

Last year, Whyte made significant strides in the league”s record books, entering 2026 as the all-time leader in field goal accuracy, boasting an impressive 88.8% success rate. He has made 557 of 627 attempts throughout 241 regular season games. His career total of 2,282 points and 557 field goals rank him ninth in the CFL”s history.

Since returning to the Lions before the 2022 season, Whyte has converted 175 of 186 field goal attempts, maintaining a 94.0% accuracy rate. He has led the CFL in field goal percentage for the past three years and has received nominations as the West Division”s candidate for the CFL Most Outstanding Special Teams Player, as well as All-CFL honors in both 2023 and 2024, according to a Lions release.

With 828 points accumulated during his Lions career (spanning from 2009-10 and 2022 to the present), Whyte ranks third on the all-time scoring list for the franchise, trailing only Canadian Football Hall of Fame members Lui Passaglia and Paul McCallum.

After his initial tenure with the Lions, Whyte played for the Montreal Alouettes from 2011 to 2014, where he earned East Division All-CFL recognition in his third year. He then spent six seasons with the Edmonton Eskimos, establishing himself as one of the premier kickers in the CFL. While with Edmonton, he played a key role in the team”s Grey Cup victory in 2015, achieving a field goal success rate of 90.2% on 195 out of 216 attempts.

Looking ahead, Whyte is committed to training harder in the offseason with aspirations for a perfect season. He remarked, “My goal this year is just to get stronger. This offseason I”m really, really going to train hard. I still have the fire in me to compete and playing at home for the BC Lions… (there”s) nothing better.”
