BC Lions kicker and White Rock native Sean Whyte has officially signed a one-year contract extension, ensuring he will continue playing with his hometown Canadian Football League team for the 2026 season. The accomplished kicker achieved a career-high field goal percentage of 95.1 percent last year, successfully converting 39 of 41 attempts, which placed him at the top of the CFL.
This upcoming season marks Whyte”s eighth with the BC Lions and his 18th in the league overall. The 40-year-old expressed his enthusiasm about remaining with the team he loves, stating, “It”s fantastic. I didn”t think I”d play for this long … to play for my hometown and just to see the excitement with my family — it”s pretty cool.” He added, “I don”t want to go anywhere else. I just feel very lucky that I get an opportunity to keep playing the game I love. Very lucky.”
Whyte has continued to climb the all-time records, entering 2026 as the CFL”s leader in field goal accuracy at 88.8 percent. His impressive career stats include 557 successful field goals out of 627 attempts over 241 regular season games, contributing to a total of 2,282 career points, which also ranks ninth on the CFL”s all-time list. Since returning to the Lions before the 2022 season, Whyte has maintained a remarkable success rate, converting 175 of 186 field goal attempts, resulting in a 94.0 percent accuracy.
Over the past three seasons, he has consistently led the league in field goal percentage and has been recognized as the West Division nominee for CFL Most Outstanding Special Teams Player. He was also named an All-CFL selection in both the 2023 and 2024 seasons, as noted in a recent team release.
With 828 points scored during his time with the Lions, Whyte is currently third on the club”s all-time scoring list, trailing only Lui Passaglia and Paul McCallum, both of whom are inductees in the Canadian Football Hall of Fame.
After his initial tenure with the Lions, Whyte played for the Montreal Alouettes from 2011 to 2014, where he earned East Division All-CFL honors in his third season. He later joined the Edmonton Eskimos, where he further solidified his status as one of the league”s top kickers, contributing to a Grey Cup championship in 2015 while achieving a field goal percentage of 90.2 percent.
Looking ahead, Whyte is committed to maintaining his performance level, stating, “My goal this year is just to get stronger. This offseason I”m really, really going to train hard. I still have the fire in me to compete and playing at home for the BC Lions … (there”s) nothing better.”
