The BC Lions have officially signed kicker Sean Whyte to a one-year contract extension, ensuring he will remain with his hometown team for at least another season. After a remarkable 2025 campaign, where he achieved a career-high field goal percentage of 95.1 by successfully converting 39 out of 41 attempts, Whyte has solidified his status as one of the league”s top kickers.
This upcoming season will mark Whyte”s eighth year with the Lions and his 18th in the Canadian Football League (CFL). The 40-year-old expressed his enthusiasm about continuing to play for the team he loves. “It”s fantastic. I didn”t think I”d play for this long… to play for my hometown and just to see the excitement with my family — it”s pretty cool,” Whyte shared on January 7. “I don”t want to go anywhere else. I just feel very lucky that I get an opportunity to keep playing the game I love. Very lucky.”
As he enters the 2026 season, Whyte continues to climb the all-time league rankings. He stands as the CFL”s all-time leader in field goal accuracy at 88.8 percent, having converted 557 of 627 attempts throughout 241 regular season games. His impressive total of 2,282 career points and 557 field goals rank him ninth on the CFL”s all-time leaderboard.
Since his return to the Lions prior to the 2022 season, Whyte has maintained an exceptional performance, successfully making 175 out of 186 field goal attempts, translating to a 94.0 percent accuracy rate. He has led the CFL in field goal percentage for three consecutive years and has been recognized as the West Division nominee for the CFL Most Outstanding Special Teams Player, along with being an All-CFL selection in both the 2023 and 2024 seasons, according to the Lions.
In his Lions career, spanning from 2009 to 2010 and then from 2022 to the present, Whyte has accumulated 828 points, placing him third on the franchise”s all-time scoring list, trailing only Lui Passaglia and Paul McCallum, both of whom are Canadian Football Hall of Fame inductees.
After his initial tenure with the Lions, Whyte spent time with the Montreal Alouettes from 2011 to 2014, earning East Division All-CFL honors during his third season. He subsequently joined the Edmonton Eskimos, where he further established his reputation as a premier kicker in the league. Notably, he contributed to the Eskimos” Grey Cup victory in 2015, achieving an impressive field goal success rate of 90.2 percent.
Looking ahead, Whyte is determined to continue his hard work and training, with aspirations for a perfect season still in sight. “My goal this year is just to get stronger. This offseason I”m really really going to train hard,” he stated. “I still have the fire in me to compete, and playing at home for the BC Lions… there”s nothing better.”
