BC Lions kicker Sean Whyte, a native of White Rock, has signed a one-year contract extension with his hometown team. This agreement ensures that the accomplished kicker will continue to play in the Canadian Football League (CFL) for at least another season.
In 2025, Whyte led the CFL with a remarkable field goal percentage of 95.1, successfully making 39 of 41 attempts. His performance earned him a spot as a West Division All-CFL selection for the third consecutive year. As he enters his eighth season with the BC Lions and 18th overall in the CFL, the 40-year-old expressed his excitement to remain with the team he loves. “It”s fantastic. I didn”t think I”d play for this long… to play for my hometown and just to see the excitement with my family — it”s pretty cool,” Whyte stated on January 7.
Whyte”s contributions have seen him climb the league”s record books. He begins the 2026 season as the all-time leader in field goal accuracy, boasting a rate of 88.8 percent after converting 557 of 627 attempts in 241 regular season games. His career total of 2,282 points and 557 field goals both rank ninth on the CFL”s all-time lists.
Since rejoining the Lions prior to the 2022 season, Whyte has converted 175 of his 186 field goal attempts, maintaining an impressive 94.0 percent success rate. His consistency has allowed him to lead the CFL in field goal percentage over the last three years. In addition, he was recognized as the West Division nominee for the CFL Most Outstanding Special Teams Player and selected as an All-CFL player in both 2023 and 2024.
Throughout his career with the Lions, spanning from 2009 to 2010 and again from 2022 to the present, Whyte has accumulated 828 points, placing him third on the franchise”s all-time scoring list, behind Hall of Famers Lui Passaglia and Paul McCallum.
Before his time with the Lions, Whyte played for the Montreal Alouettes from 2011 to 2014, where he earned East Division All-CFL honors in his third season. He later joined the Edmonton Eskimos for six seasons, solidifying his status as one of the league”s leading kickers. During his tenure in Edmonton, he helped the team secure a Grey Cup championship in 2015, making 90.2 percent of his field goal attempts.
Looking ahead, Whyte is committed to training even harder and aims for a perfect season. “My goal this year is just to get stronger. This offseason, I”m really going to train hard,” he remarked. “I still have the fire in me to compete, and playing at home for the BC Lions… there”s nothing better.”
