The Bengals” strategy appears to center around enhancing a defense that struggled in the previous season. While the team remains optimistic about their linebacker duo of 2025 draft picks, Demetrius Knight Jr. and Barrett Carter, both players faced significant challenges last year. Knight concluded his rookie campaign with 106 total tackles, four tackles for loss, seven passes defended, one forced fumble, and two interceptions over 14 games. Carter, a Clemson product, matched Knight”s tackle count but registered only one tackle for loss and one interception, finishing the season with a disappointing PFF grade of 39.5 and 18 missed tackles.
Relying on the development of these second-year players poses a considerable risk for the Bengals. Adding another rookie, regardless of their draft position, does not address the need for experience at the linebacker spot. A veteran presence is essential to instill leadership within the group.
One prominent name still available on the market is Bobby Wagner, a seasoned linebacker who has had a storied career with the Seattle Seahawks, Los Angeles Rams, and Washington Commanders. Wagner, recognized as one of the top linebackers of the 2010s, boasts an impressive resume that includes ten Pro Bowl selections, six All-Pro nods, and a Super Bowl championship with Seattle. Although he will turn 36 before the season begins, Wagner continues to perform at a high level, ranking as the ninth-best linebacker last season. During his two years in Washington, he accumulated 294 tackles, 18 tackles for loss, two interceptions, eight passes defended, one forced fumble, and two fumble recoveries.
If the Bengals could secure Wagner on a manageable contract, he might become the vital leader they desperately need in their linebacker room. Furthermore, his continued effectiveness suggests he has plenty left to contribute on the field.
