Cleveland Browns legend Bernie Kosar took to social media on Monday, November 24, to share the news of his hospital discharge, which was set for later that day. Kosar, who is 61 years old, had spent over a year on the waiting list in hopes of receiving a liver transplant, which he finally underwent early last week.
In his social media update, Kosar also congratulated the Browns for their 24-10 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders the previous day. He expressed heartfelt appreciation for the love, prayers, and support he received while hospitalized. “Blessed to be getting discharged today, and appreciative of all the support that”s carried me to this point,” he wrote. “Just in time for my birthday tomorrow!”
Initially, doctors had planned for Kosar to remain in the hospital until next month. During his press conference at University Hospitals, he shared that the five-hour surgery went smoothly, allowing for the quick removal of his breathing tube. “I”m walking out of here overwhelmed with gratitude,” Kosar added. “The love, prayers, and support have carried me to this moment. Thank you to everyone who”s given, checked in, or simply believed. You matter — and now the real work begins.”
The donor of Kosar”s liver was identified as 21-year-old Bryce Dunlap, a devoted Browns fan who tragically passed away due to a medical emergency. Kosar acknowledged the emotional weight of this situation, stating, “That”s probably the biggest struggle of it right now. We”re still doing this with heavy hearts with what happened with Bryce Dunlap and his family. I can”t tell you how much my thoughts and prayers are with you. I can”t thank you enough. I”m not taking this gift for granted.”
While Kosar refrained from going into extensive detail, he made sure to honor Dunlap and his family during the press conference. “I want to acknowledge my donor, Bryce, and his family. I”m thankful for the chance to recover. Please consider donating to his family. Thank you and you matter,” he urged.
Throughout his illustrious career, Kosar played for the Browns from 1985 to 1993 after being selected first overall in the 1985 Supplemental Draft. He earned a Pro Bowl selection in 1987 at the age of 24 and later played three seasons with the Miami Dolphins and one season with the Dallas Cowboys.
As Kosar reflects on his health journey, he emphasizes the importance of positivity. “I want to think about things that are helpful,” he stated. “It sounds like I”m getting on a soapbox here, but I visualize good health. It”s not so much that I”m trying to sell it to myself or that I”m in denial, as it is choosing to be positive.”
