Brian Robinson Jr. is determined to carve out a more significant role with the San Francisco 49ers as the team approaches the latter part of the 2025 NFL season. Coach Kyle Shanahan acknowledged that Robinson has earned the opportunity for increased carries following several solid performances.
Robinson, who joined the 49ers as a backup to Christian McCaffrey, has showcased his potential despite not being the leading rusher for the team this year. Shanahan noted, “I think four weeks in a row, he”s had his best game, so each week it keeps getting better.” While McCaffrey has dominated the field, participating in 84 percent of the offensive snaps—the highest among running backs in the NFL—Robinson has made the most of his opportunities, amassing 238 yards and two touchdowns on 49 carries.
In recent weeks, Robinson”s performance has been particularly impressive, as he recorded 94 yards and two touchdowns on just 13 rushing attempts over the last two games. This surge has sparked discussions about his growing role as the season continues.
Before joining the 49ers, Robinson had a notable collegiate career at the University of Alabama, where he played alongside future NFL stars like Jerome Ford, Damien Harris, Najee Harris, Josh Jacobs, Jase McClellan, and Bo Scarbrough. During his time with the Crimson Tide, he totaled 1,361 yards and 15 touchdowns on 274 carries over four seasons, and in 2021, he added 1,343 yards and 14 touchdowns on 271 rushing attempts.
Robinson reflected on his journey, stating, “You don”t come in and start, even if you have the talent or ability. It”s rare that you come in and be a Day 1 starter. It”s taught me just to be patient, stay down and continue working. When my time comes, I got to be ready for that.” He emphasized the importance of being prepared regardless of his current role, noting, “I got to still prepare like I”m the guy. That”s just how I come to work.” This mindset has kept him ready for any opportunity that may arise.
In a recent game against the New York Giants, Robinson demonstrated his resilience by bowling over cornerback Deonte Banks for a touchdown. He continued to impress in a matchup against the Los Angeles Rams, where he powered through a tackle attempt for another score. Robinson expressed satisfaction with his performance, stating, “It couldn”t have felt any better than to cross the goal line the last two weeks.”
The 49ers are set to face the Arizona Cardinals in an NFC West showdown, with the game scheduled for 3:05 PM CST on Sunday at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. San Francisco enters the contest with a 6-4 record, while Arizona holds a 3-6 mark.
As Robinson continues to push for more carries, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how he contributes to the 49ers” playoff aspirations.
